The results are in! The second annual Biggest Loser Challenge kicked off with a great start this year in the canine division. A small group of feline competitors took on the Challenge also. The Beagles and Labrador Retrievers dominated the competition; begged by their owners to leave the food bowl and hit the sidewalks, their results on the scale were impressive!

The numerous canine and feline patients weighed in over a six month period to track weight loss goals and battle for the "Biggest Loser" title and earn a $50 Forest Home Animal Clinic gift certificate. Top canine and feline winners were chosen based on percentage of weight lost. The honorable mention category recognizes participants that may have had less weight loss than others during the challenge, or those that had noticeable weight loss efforts over the last year visiting the clinic.

Weight loss and nutrition counseling are always available to your pet here at the clinic and we encourage the use of our weight scale any time during regular clinic hours. Also, prescription diets are available at the clinic to accelerate your dog or cat's weight loss.

The canine winner, Bailey B. strutted in for her final weigh in after losing 23% body weight in only six months. Great job girl! Bailey's parents are very proud of her efforts and overall improved health. "We cut back on the amount of dog food, but with her being 11 years old and having back problems we were not able to increase her exercise as much as we would like." Her parents were elated that she is acting like a puppy again, jumping around and very active, without the use of any pain medications.

The runner up canine was Sheba U., a Labrador Retriever mix, whose diligence was evident from a 12% loss in body weight. Sheba's mother was very pleased each time she came to the clinic for weigh-ins.

While the feline division this year was a bit short on contestants, those that actively participated had significant weight loss. It requires extra hard work to encourage cats to be more active, as our competitors will all agree!

The feline winner was Abbey Rose B., a Domestic Shorthair. She lost an amazing 11% body weight in only two months. Abbey's mother commented on her success, "We reduced her daily food intake, cut out people food, and gave fewer treats. Every time she begged for food we knew she wanted attention, so we gave her lots of petting and praise instead of treats. She also enjoys chasing after dental treats that we throw up and down the stairs for exercise." Excellent weight loss habits Abbey!

Second place honors went to Frog C., also a Domestic Shorthair. He lost 6% body weight during the Challenge. Recently Frog came into the clinic and has kept on track, now over 9% in less than four months. Keep up the good work Frog!

Canine and feline competitors are already gearing up for the 2012 Challenge. Stay posted on our website for updates as the Biggest Loser Challenge begins again next spring. New for the third annual Challenge, participants may sign-up prior to the official start date as we encourage your pet's weight loss and healthy lifestyle changes to occur year round. Your pet's weight will be tracked for a six month period from the date of first weigh-in. Bring your pet in today for a consult and get a head start on that holiday bulge. Improve your pet's health and have them swimsuit ready by summer!!

Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season,
The Doctors and Staff of Forest Home Animal Clinic
